After the previous weekend of racing at Hampton Downs, I turned up to Taupo keen as hell for the 3 days of riding ahead. I was definitely feeling more confident on the critical little RS125 and looking forward to learning the track. With Cyclone Pamela threatening the weekend, I weaselled my way into a space in the Team Aspire garage next to the Rogans and put my head down in the Friday practice.
The weekend went on without a hitch or any rain and by the end of it I was able to push myself along nicely. Being around Team Aspire, Steve Ward Racing and the Rogans was great! As they say, teams make champions and I picked up some valuable tips like the timing of warming up your bike, fuel management and preparation. I qualified 5th from 8 with a 1:43:931, between Mihi and Lewis. I had some work to do. Over the three races in the weekend I placed 6th, 5th and unfortunately had my first mechanical DNF with half a lap to go when in 3rd place! Over the weekend I dropped my PB to 1:42:924 which I was stoked with considering a few months back my best time was about 5 seconds on top of that. The best 125GP lap time over the weekend was from Sam Davison at 1:38:852 so I'm still a bunch of time off the lead pack.
So my first experiences with the NZSBK series were awesome. I had loads of fun, learnt some valuable lessons and met some brilliant racers. I plan to do the full 2016 series (funding dependant) but for now I'm focusing on racing as much as I can through the winter. Thanks everyone who helped me out or just hyped me up before a race, see you on the grid
Thanks for the last racing photo JDas photos.
