Oh man. Hockenheim Ring. What a fun track! And fast! There are about 6 full throttle corners on the circuit for these little rippers and some of them are right on the edge of how much corner speed you can carry. Points for the brave! Today definitely wasn’t the perfect start to the round for me but I’m properly stoked on riding a track I’ve dreamed of for years. I ended the two sessions in 5th with a lot of work to do to find the time I know is out there.
So how’d I go? Session 1 was good. I felt comfortable with the track fairly quickly and I had the skeleton of what I needed to do in a few laps. I’ve been having some trouble getting enough heat in the tyres so I had two very big slides, one on the front then another on the rear, trying to go through the faster corners tapped. I set an okay pace for 5th place. My top speed was well down though and the bike wasn’t revving past 13,700rpm and it should be hitting around 15,000rpm so so something was way off.
Before session 2 we retarded the ignition back to where it was at Emmen, added another layer onto the front tyre warmer for extra heat, dropped some tyre pressure and jetted down for the warmer temps. It made a massive difference and I dropped 1.6s with the bike now revving to 14,600rpm and the tyres feeling much better.
I was still getting my ass kicked though and came in a little disheartened having remained in 5th. I got the cylinder off for a new top end this evening and was amused to see the base gasket had somehow gotten squashed and was covering half the transfer port opening! Shit that will do it! Also looking at my GoPro footage I’m not properly pulling top gear so we’ve gone up a tooth on the rear to to regain some more pace. So we’re making progress and although it sucks to only have one more session before heading into a race tomorrow, I know we’re going in the right direction.
The fresh piston sounds much crisper than before and I’m looking forward to properly tapping out 6th gear. Now I just need to grow a pair and keep it flat through some of those fast ones.
